Hector Olivera was placed on unconditional release waivers by the San Diego Padres, who will release him when he clears waivers later this week and will be responsible for the remainder of the $62.5 million, six-year contract he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in early 2015. Olivera, a 31-year-old outfielder and third baseman who did not play a single game for the Padres, hit .245 with two homers and 13 RBIs under the deal, appearing in 30 big league games and getting 98 at-bats. While with Atlanta, he was arrested April 13 at a hotel near Washington D.C., and Major League Baseball announced May 27 that he had agreed to an 82-game suspension under the sport's domestic violence policy, a penalty retroactive to April 30.
