On Jan. 29, 1988, the Dodgers signed free-agent slugger Kirk Gibson. The team was talented but undisciplined, and the front office wanted a vocal leader in the clubhouse.Gibson fit the description to a tee. He wound up winning the National League MVP award and leading the Dodgers to a championship in his first season in Los Angeles.
