Dallas - As baseball's winter meetings officially began Monday, Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvinhad only one official offer on the table, and it was quicklysnubbed. Utility player infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. turned down anopportunity to return to Milwaukee and accepted a two-year, $6million offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Brewers had hoped to keep theversatile Hairston, particularly with utility infielder CraigCounsell out of the picture for 2012. Hairston's decision not onlyleft the Brewers without a startingshortstop, it muddled their backup infield situation. "We'll have to try to find somebody else," Melvin said. "That'shis decision. He's a free agent and they get to decide that." Ithas been slow going for the Brewers in their quest to firm uptheir infield for next season. They continue to assume that firstbaseman Prince Fielder will play elsewhere, leaving question marksat that position as well as shortstop and third base.
