One of Major League Baseball's maddeningly arcane rules is in sharp focus this week for the Dodgers. Starting pitcher John Ely and third baseman Josh Fields are enjoying exceptional seasons at Triple-A, and both play a position of need for the Dodgers. But because neither player is on the 40-man roster, Ely and Fields can't simply be recalled to the majors if another is sent down or placed on the 15-day disabled list.
