Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu, a South Korean left-hander, will begin the upcoming Major League Baseball season on the disabled list, team manager Don Mattingly said. Ryu, who turns 28 on Wednesday, went 14-7 with a 3.38 earned-run average last season. Mattingly said a cortisone injection, treatment that helped ease shoulder stiffness last season, was given last week but Ryu was barely able to lob a ball Sunday. Ryu, who helped South Korea capture 2008 Beijing Olympic baseball gold, complained of arm stiffness after a start last Tuesday against Texas in which he never reached full velocity with his fastball.
