Conroy became the first openly gay active baseball player when he took the mound for the independent league Sonoma Stompers. Major League Baseball historian John Thorn recognized the feat as official, despite it not occurring in the big leagues, and Conroy took it a step further by twirling a gem, striking out 11 in a 7-0 win on Pride Night at the ballpark.
