On Broadway, the playbill always has this disclaimer: "Understudies never substitute for listed performers unless a specific announcement is made at the time of the performance."That doesn't soothe the wound if the guy who served you an omelet in the morning is filling in for Dustin Hoffman in "Death of a Salesman" that night, but it's there.
